New York Shipping Container Housing Post-Disaster
Who would have thought of using New York shipping containers as housing post-disaster? The Office of Emergency management revealed post-disaster news on housing. They stated that using shipping containers as homes would be fitting following the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. A three to four story complex would be fenced and stand for as long as a year. The location is directly across the street from the OEM offices. They are collaborating with others such as the NYC Department of Design and Construction.
Construction is expected after a proposal has been decided on. A gallery on the first floor of the unit would be responsible for explaining the project to the neighborhood. Though residents of the area are expected to inhabit this unit for at least six months, no decision has been reached on who will be chosen to experience this New York shipping container housing post-disaster unit. The importance of shipping containers cannot be taken for granted. In this case, instead of dismissing simple shipping containers, they have been chosen to be part of something bigger that the community can benefit from. Reusable New York shipping containers have the potential to change lives.
